How Can I Create a Kernel Memory Dump When Windows Crashes?
Do you like this story?
Problem:
I was instructed by a National Instruments Applications Engineer to email a kernel memory dump file of a Windows crash. How do I create a kernel memory dump file?
Solution:
To create a kernel memory dump file, you can select System from the Windows Control Panel. Then change the Startup and Recovery settings to match those in the screenshots below.
A dump file will now be generated after Windows stops unexpectedley. The default location for the dump file is
%SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP
. %SystemRoot%
is the Windows installation directory, usually C:\WINDOWS
. This would make the location of the dump file be C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP
